Holmium Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)

Holmium Enucleation of the prostate is the gold standard treatment for an enlarged prostate (also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia - BPH), a common condition found in men between the ages of 50-90.

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate may include: weak urinary stream, getting up frequently at night, going often during the daytime, strong urgency to go to the restroom, or even urinary incontinence.

Why choose HoLEP?

Minimally invasive: There are no incisions and it is done in an outpatient surgery center. Surgery takes between 60-90 minutes depending on prostate size, and you will go home the same day.
Convenient with quick recovery: You will take out your catheter the next day at home. There are no restrictions after surgery, return to normal life.
Effective: Just have something done once! There is not a more effective treatment. The chance of needing another surgery or medication after HoLEP surgery is only 2% at 20 years! 98% of men will never need anything done again.
- Other treatments (TURP, Urolift, Aquablation, Rezum) have worse retreatment rates. Within just a few years, ~10-50% of men who choose a treatment other than HoLEP may require another surgery or require medications to help urinate.
Sexual function: HoLEP does not affect sexual function (erections, orgasm, or penile sensation do not change after surgery).

Predictors of Medication Cessation After Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Procedures

This is a seminal study that appeared in The Journal of Urology August 2026. It demonstrated that compared to all other surgical approaches, HoLEP patients had the lowest chance of needing medications again after surgery.
